Plate Compactor: Sizes, Uses and Rental Rates in the UAE

A plate compactor is a petrol or diesel machine with a vibrating steel base plate that packs soil, sand and paving bases. Sizes, uses and UAE hire costs.

A plate compactor is a walk-behind machine with a heavy steel base plate that vibrates against the ground. The vibration packs sand, gravel, soil and asphalt tighter, so the surface will not settle later. An engine, usually petrol or diesel, drives an eccentric weight above the plate, and the machine pulls itself forward as it shakes.

If you searched for a "compactor machine", this is the small one: one person walks behind it. The large ride-on version is a road roller.

What a plate compactor is used for

On UAE sites it is the standard tool for compaction that is too small or too tight for a roller:

  • Bases under interlock paving, kerbs and car park surfaces.
  • Backfill over drainage pipes and cable trenches, layer by layer.
  • Compacting sand and crushed stone around villa slabs, boundary walls and pool surrounds.
  • Patching asphalt after a utility cut.
  • Sub-base for garden paths and driveways.

It works best on granular material such as sand, gravel and crushed rock. It is poor on wet clay, which needs a rammer or a padfoot roller because the plate cannot reach the depth.

Types and sizes

TypeMachine weightPlate widthCompaction depthTypical use
Light forward plate60 to 100 kg400 to 500 mm100 to 200 mmPaving bases, small patches
Medium reversible plate100 to 300 kg450 to 650 mm250 to 400 mmTrenches, service backfill, base courses
Heavy reversible plate300 to 700 kg600 to 900 mm400 to 600 mmRoad base, large pads, utilities

The figures are typical ranges, so check the maker's data sheet. The number that matters most is the centrifugal force, shown in kilonewtons (kN). A light plate gives about 10 to 20 kN, a heavy reversible plate 40 to 80 kN or more.

Forward plates only travel one way, so you turn them by hand. Reversible plates have a handle that sends them forward or backward, which is what you want in a trench. Some heavy models are remote controlled, so the operator stays out of the trench.

For a large flat area, a ride-on roller does the job faster than a plate. Browse all compactors for rent if you want to compare.

How to choose a size

Think about the layer you are compacting. A plate compacts one layer at a time, so for a 600 mm trench backfill you need a plate that works in 200 to 300 mm lifts and several passes, or a bigger plate. Match the machine to the access as well: a light forward plate fits through a villa gate and into the back garden, while a 500 kg plate needs a vehicle to move it.

A good working rule is three to five passes per layer. More passes on dry sand with no moisture will not help much. A light water spray helps sand pack tighter. Always check the specification for density requirements, because a plate that looks adequate can still fall short.

To estimate the material you are compacting, use the tonnes to cubic metres converter to convert tonnes to cubic metres, or the excavation volume calculator for trench backfill.

UAE hire and used prices

Plate compactors are one of the cheapest machines to hire, and suppliers usually quote a day or a week. The rate depends on the plate weight, whether it is reversible, whether fuel is included, and delivery. A heavy reversible plate costs several times more than a light forward plate. Prices for the whole compactor category, including ride-on rollers, are on our road roller guide, but a plate costs far less than a roller. For a firm number, ask suppliers directly.

Rent or buy

Rent for a single project, an occasional repair or a one-off paving job. A plate compactor is small enough that a paving or landscaping contractor who uses one every week often buys a new light forward plate. Buy a used machine only after you have started it, checked the base plate for cracks and wear, and listened for loose bearings in the exciter housing. Heavy reversible plates are usually better hired unless you are laying roads continuously.

Operator and safety

A plate compactor does not usually need a heavy-machinery licence, but the operator should be trained and wear ear protection, safety boots and gloves. The handle vibrates, so rotate people on long jobs. Never compact next to a trench wall that is not supported, and never let the machine run unattended on a slope. For the heavier plates and remote-controlled models, most suppliers will send a trained operator.

Common questions

What is a plate compactor used for?

It compacts sand, gravel, crushed stone and asphalt. Typical jobs are paving bases, trench backfill and patching.

What is a compactor machine?

It is any machine that makes ground denser. That covers a plate compactor, a trench rammer and a ride-on roller. The plate compactor is the small walk-behind kind.

How deep does a plate compactor compact?

A light plate compacts about 100 to 200 mm of granular material. A heavy reversible plate can reach 400 to 600 mm.

Can a plate compactor be used on clay?

Not well. Clay is cohesive and needs an impact rammer or a padfoot roller.

How heavy should the plate compactor be?

Pick by layer thickness and material. For paving bases, 60 to 100 kg is usually enough. For trench backfill, choose a reversible plate of 150 kg or more.

Plate compactor or roller: which should I hire?

Use a plate for small and narrow areas. Use a road roller when the area is large and flat.
