Skid Steer Loader: Sizes, Uses and Rental Rates in the UAE
A skid steer loader is a compact four-wheel loader that turns on the spot and swaps attachments. Sizes, the Bobcat name, UAE rental rates and what to check.

A skid steer loader is a small, rigid-framed loader with lift arms and a bucket at the front. It has no steering wheel. The wheels on the left and right sides are driven separately, so slowing one side makes it turn, and running them in opposite directions spins the machine on the spot.
That is why it is the machine of choice where there is no room: a villa plot, a basement, a warehouse yard, a pavement.
Is a skid steer the same as a Bobcat?
Not exactly, but in the UAE people use the words as if they were. Bobcat is a manufacturer, and it built the loader that made the type famous. On UAE sites "bring a bobcat" means any skid steer, whoever made it, in the same way that "JCB" means any backhoe. What a skid steer is used for
- Moving sand, soil, blocks and rubble around a tight site.
- Cleaning up after other trades, with a bucket or a broom.
- Light levelling before paving, turfing or tiling.
- Breaking small areas of concrete or asphalt, with a hydraulic breaker.
- Drilling post and tree holes with an auger.
- Lifting pallets and materials with fork attachments.
- Loading small tippers and trailers.
It suits work where a backhoe loader or wheel loader will not fit. It does not replace an excavator for digging, because the lift arms cannot dig below ground level in any serious way.

The most common size on UAE sites is the small to medium class. The Bobcat S450, for instance, has a rated operating capacity of 608 kg and is about 1.5 metres wide over the tyres, so it will not fit through a standard door.
Wheeled or tracked
A wheeled skid steer is the normal choice for concrete, asphalt and firm ground, and it is quick. A compact track loader runs on rubber tracks, spreads its weight better, and copes with soft sand and wet ground without sinking. It costs more to buy and rent, and the tracks wear faster on hard rock and sharp debris.
Radial lift or vertical lift
A radial lift arm swings in an arc, so it is best for digging and pushing at ground level. A vertical lift arm raises the load more directly upward, which makes loading trucks and stacking pallets easier. If you will mostly load trucks, ask for vertical lift.

How to choose a size
- Measure the way in. Gates, ramps, lift doors and door frames set the maximum width.
- Weigh the load. A pallet of concrete blocks can weigh more than a small skid steer's rated capacity. The rated operating capacity is the limit, and it is set at about half the load that would tip the machine.
- Match the attachment. A breaker or an auger needs enough hydraulic flow. High-flow machines cost more, so only ask for one if the attachment needs it.
- Check the surface. Concrete and asphalt can be damaged by the skidding turns of a heavy wheeled machine. Put boards down or use a track loader on finished floors.
UAE rental rates and used prices
On the listings published on our site on 1 November 2026, skid steers rented for a median of about AED 450 a day, AED 2,750 a week and AED 8,500 a month, before VAT. Used machines for sale had a median of about AED 53,500 across all makes. Bobcat-branded machines were a little cheaper in the sample, around AED 400 a day and AED 35,000 used. These are medians of small samples, not quotes, and most suppliers price on request.
What moves the price: the size, the age and hours, whether tracks are fitted, whether an operator is included, which attachments come with it, and who pays for diesel and delivery. For hires longer than about three weeks, the monthly rate is usually cheaper than paying the day rate. Rent or buy
Rent for a project, a clean-up, or when a particular attachment is only needed for a few days. Buy a used machine if you use it most weeks, for example a landscaping, paving or maintenance company with its own yard. Before buying, check the lift arm pins and bushings, the hydraulic hoses, any oil leaks, the tyre or track condition and the hour meter, and start the engine cold to see whether it smokes. Operator and safety
A skid steer looks simple but it tips easily when it carries a load high or turns on a slope. Operators in the UAE should hold a valid operator certificate, and most suppliers include a trained operator on request. Keep the seat belt fastened and the safety bar down, carry the bucket low, and never let anyone stand near the lift arms. Check the working area for pipes, cables and edges.
