Forklift Rental in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi: What to Check

For most warehouse work in the UAE, a 2.5 to 3 t electric counterbalance forklift with a container mast does the job. For yards and loading bays, the same size in diesel is the usual pick. Go to 5 t and above for steel, blocks and machinery, and to a rough-terrain machine when the ground is sand or loose fill. Whatever you rent, the operator needs a UAE forklift licence, and in Dubai a training certificate the Municipality recognises. If the forklift is going into a Dubai warehouse or factory, it will also need cameras and proximity sensors by 1 January 2027.

Start with the load, not the brochure capacity

A forklift's rated capacity is measured at a set load centre, the distance from the fork face to the centre of gravity of the load. 500 mm is the usual standard, and it is printed on the data plate with the capacity. Put a longer load on the forks and capacity drops in proportion. A truck rated 1,800 kg at 500 mm handles 1,500 kg at 600 mm (1,800 × 500 ÷ 600).

That catches people out with pallets. A 1,200 × 800 mm pallet picked from its short side has a load centre of 600 mm if it is evenly loaded, not 500. Capacity also falls with lift height and with attachments such as side-shifts and fork positioners. The data plate or load chart for the actual truck shows the de-rated figures. Dubai Municipality's forklift guideline tells operators to read the load chart and never exceed the data plate rating.

So before you call a supplier, write down:

  • The heaviest single load and its size (pallet, bundle, crate, drum)
  • The highest point you need to place it, and the lowest door or beam you need to pass under
  • The floor: smooth concrete, asphalt, interlock, sand or loose fill
  • Indoors, outdoors, or both

If you need to place loads over an obstacle or onto an upper floor, you are probably looking at a telehandler, not a forklift. Our guide to forklift types covers the less common machines.

Diesel, electric or LPG

The fumes are what decide it. Dubai Municipality's Safe Forklift Operations guideline says engine-powered forklifts should be avoided in poorly ventilated areas, that electric forklifts are the safer choice where ventilation is inadequate, and that carbon monoxide levels in enclosed areas should be monitored. A diesel truck working at the door of a busy warehouse soon fills the aisles behind it.

Electric has its own conditions. The same guideline wants battery charging in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, with an eyewash, spill kit and acid-resistant PPE at the charging bay, and a charging log. Before you take an electric truck, check that you have a space for this and the power supply the supplier's charger needs.

For LPG, refuelling must follow Dubai Civil Defence requirements, and the fuel valve must be shut off when the truck is parked. Agree who supplies the cylinders and where they will be stored.

Mast height and container work

Mast choice is two measurements. The first is maximum lift: your top rack beam or stacking height, plus enough clearance to get the load on and off. The second, which people forget, is the lowered height of the mast and overhead guard, which must pass under every door, mezzanine and canopy on the route.

Containers are the hard case. A standard 20 ft container's door opening is about 2.28 m high, and a high cube's about 2.59 m, though it varies by manufacturer. A container mast is built for this. It is low when lowered, and it has full free lift, so the forks can rise inside the box without the mast extending into the roof. If you are stuffing or stripping containers, say so in the enquiry and ask for the lowered height and free lift in writing.

Warehouse or construction yard

Indoor warehouses and factories in Dubai now come under the Municipality's Safe Forklift Operations guideline, issued in December 2025. External Circular 01/2026, dated 10 June 2026, requires industrial establishments and warehouses using forklifts to have these in place by 1 January 2027:

  • A traffic management plan separating forklift routes from pedestrian walkways
  • 360-degree cameras on forklifts
  • Proximity sensors that warn the operator of nearby obstacles
  • Blue and red warning spotlights (recommended)
  • Daily pre-use inspections and a maintenance log
  • Accredited operator training, with refreshers

The duty sits with the establishment, so a rented truck is your problem as much as an owned one. Ask the supplier now whether their units come fitted, or who fits and calibrates the kit, before you sign a hire running into 2027.

Construction sites in Dubai follow the Code of Construction Safety Practice. It requires forklifts to have overhead protection for the driver, an alarm and buzzer and a reverse alarm, and to be thoroughly examined every 12 months by an approved inspection body with a safety certificate. Attachments must be approved by the manufacturer, and the driver must lift the load at least 20 cm off the ground to check its stability before moving off.

Operator licensing in the UAE

A forklift licence in the UAE is a driving licence. Dubai's RTA handbook for forklift operators sets the eligibility: over 20 years of age, an eye test, training until competent, and a knowledge test and practical test. The licence you get depends on the truck you are tested on. A light licence covers forklifts with an empty weight up to 7.5 t. A heavy licence covers forklifts over 7.5 t and also allows the light ones. The empty weight is on the data plate, and large-capacity forklifts can pass 7.5 t, so match the operator's licence to the machine before it arrives.

In Dubai, the licence alone is not enough. The Code of Construction Safety Practice requires a valid UAE licence plus a training and qualifying certificate approved by Dubai Municipality. Operators of lifting equipment, forklifts included, must also be tested every 12 months by an approved third-party inspection body. The Safe Forklift Operations guideline adds third-party certified and refresher training for every operator, including temporary or outsourced ones, and a copy of the operator's licence kept on site. If you rent a forklift with an operator, ask for both documents and check the dates.

For Abu Dhabi, construction work falls under the Occupational Safety and Health System Framework (OSHAD-SF), supervised by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre. We did not find a published Abu Dhabi or Sharjah rule on forklift operators as detailed as Dubai's, so treat the client's HSE requirements as the rule there and get them in writing.

What it costs, and daily or monthly hire

On EquipmentsFinder in late October 2026, the forklift rentals that publish a rate had a median of about AED 1,200 a day, AED 5,000 a week and AED 14,500 a month. Only 7 or 8 of 219 rental listings show a rate, and those figures mix all sizes, so treat them as a rough guide and get a quote for your size. For buyers, the median asking price was about AED 61,750 (32 listings). Machines listed at up to 3.5 t asked about AED 49,500 (18 listings), and 3.6 to 7 t machines about AED 80,000 (10 listings).

Hire by the day for a delivery, a one-off unloading or a short shutdown. For anything that runs for weeks, ask for the monthly rate as well. Compare it against the number of days you really expect to use the truck, and add delivery and collection, which are often charged each way.

Things to agree before you sign:

  • With or without operator. Both are offered. With your own operator, the licence and certificates are your responsibility.
  • Hours included per day or month, and the charge beyond them
  • Maintenance and breakdowns: who services the truck, and how fast a replacement arrives
  • Fuel, LPG cylinders or the battery charger
  • Delivery and collection charges, and whether monthly hire includes them
  • Cameras and sensors for Dubai warehouses after 1 January 2027

Supply is deepest in Dubai and Sharjah. Listings on EquipmentsFinder in late October 2026 show 104 forklifts for rent in Dubai, 62 in Sharjah and 45 in Abu Dhabi, with 8 in Fujairah and 5 in Ajman. You can compare them all on the forklift rental page. If the job is long enough that buying makes sense, Sharjah is where the used market is: 83 forklifts are listed for sale there against 20 in Dubai. See forklifts for sale.

What to check when it arrives

Do these checks with the delivery driver still on site, and refuse the truck if something is wrong.

  • The data plate matches what you ordered: capacity, load centre, lift height and any attachment
  • A current third-party inspection certificate for the truck and its attachments, with a copy kept on site
  • Overhead guard intact, horn, reverse alarm and seat belt working
  • Cameras, sensors and warning lights fitted and working, if it is going into a Dubai warehouse
  • Forks straight, with no cracks at the heel, and fork locking pins in place
  • Mast chains evenly tensioned, no hydraulic leaks under the truck or on the mast
  • Tyres in good condition and suited to your floor
  • Battery charged and the charger supplied, or LPG fittings and cylinder secure
  • The operator's licence class matches the truck's empty weight, and the training certificate is in date

Then start the pre-use inspection log on day one. Dubai's guideline expects a documented check before every shift, and a log that starts on arrival also protects you if the supplier disputes damage at collection.

Common questions

How much is a forklift rental in Dubai? Published UAE rates are around AED 1,200 a day and AED 14,500 a month, from a small sample across all sizes. Those figures are for the UAE as a whole. For your size and dates, post a request.

Do I need a licence to drive a forklift in the UAE? Yes. A forklift licence is a driving licence. In Dubai, operators also need a training certificate approved by the Municipality.

What forklift do I need for a container? Usually a 2.5 to 3 t truck with a container mast. Check its lowered height and free lift against the container door before you hire it.

Do rented forklifts in Dubai need cameras? From 1 January 2027, industrial establishments and warehouses using forklifts in Dubai need 360-degree cameras and proximity sensors. The duty sits with the establishment, so ask your supplier now.
