Nearly every set listed is diesel, usually a Caterpillar or Perkins engine driving a Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternator. Diesel sets run for days on a single tank, tolerate the summer heat with a proper cooling package and are serviced by every engine dealer in the UAE. Ratings in the listings range from small single-phase units to sets of several hundred kVA.
A silent set sits in an acoustic canopy that cuts noise to a level acceptable near housing, offices and hotels. Most canopied sets on the listings are of this kind. The canopy also keeps sand out of the alternator, so a sound-attenuated set is the sensible buy for almost any UAE location except a remote plant compound.
Trailer-mounted sets in the 20 to 100 kVA range tow behind a pickup and move between sites or events without a crane. Check the trailer's own condition, lights and coupling as carefully as the set, and ask whether the trailer is registered for the road.
A standby set runs only during a mains failure and carries a higher rating for short periods. A prime-rated set is built to run continuously as the main supply, which is how construction sites and labour camps use them. The listing should say which rating applies; if it quotes a single kVA figure, ask the seller whether that is standby or prime.
Add up the running load of everything the set will supply, then add the starting surge of the largest motor, since compressors, pumps and air-conditioning units draw several times their running current when they start. Size the set so that the normal load sits between 50 and 80 percent of its prime rating; a diesel engine that idles at low load for months glazes its bores and wet-stacks.
Derate for heat. A set rated at 25 degrees loses output above 40 degrees, which is most of the UAE summer, so a site that needs 100 kVA in August should not buy a 100 kVA set. Match the voltage and phase to the site: three-phase 400 V for construction and industrial use, single-phase for small offices and lighting.
A construction site wants a prime-rated set with a large fuel tank, a tough canopy and simple controls, and it will accept some noise. Hours accumulate fast, so a used set with a documented service record is good value.
An event or a wedding tent needs a silent set with low hours, a clean canopy, a synchronising panel if two sets run together and a fuel tank sized for the evening with a margin. Buyers running an events business often prefer newer sets because a failure in front of guests costs more than the price difference.

Sellers normally supply a sale invoice, a copy of their trade licence and any import or ownership papers. Match the engine and alternator serial numbers to the paperwork. A towable set may need its trailer registration transferred, which the seller can explain. Ask for the service log and the original test certificate if available.
