A flatbed truck has a flat open deck with no sides or roof, built into the truck itself. The open deck lets you load by crane, forklift or by hand from any side, and it takes long items that a closed body cannot: steel sections, pipes, timber, machinery on pallets and building boards. Deck length differs by truck, so ask for the exact figure and compare it with your longest item. Overhanging loads need to be flagged and marked. If your load exceeds the standard deck, ask whether the supplier has a longer vehicle or a trailer option.
Light machines and pallets can travel on a flatbed if they are within the rated payload and properly secured. Heavy or tracked equipment needs a lowbed trailer and a ramp. Tell the supplier the machine's weight and size first, and they will advise.
Securing should be agreed before the trip. Ask whether the supplier supplies straps, chains and edge protection, and whether the driver checks the load before leaving. Securing is a safety requirement, so do not leave it until arrival at the site.
