A PTR roller has two rows of smooth rubber tyres that knead the surface. It seals and finishes asphalt, closing the pores that a steel drum can leave open, and it is the usual follow-on after a breakdown roller on wearing courses. It also compacts chip seal, granular sub-base and some soils. Tyre pressure and ballast can be changed to suit the layer.
