A hand roller, also called a walk-behind or pedestrian roller, is a small double-drum roller guided by an operator on foot. It compacts asphalt and soil where a road roller cannot fit: footpaths, cycle tracks, driveways, trench reinstatement, patch repairs and car-park edges. Drums are often vibrating to give more compaction from a lighter machine.

It compacts thin layers of asphalt and granular soil over small areas, such as pathways, driveways and trench patches. It is not suited to deep layers or large road widths, where a ride-on roller does the work faster and reaches the required density.
Operators should be shown how to start, steer and stop the machine, and how to avoid being trapped against a wall. Whether the supplier provides an operator or only the machine varies by supplier and is stated on the listing or confirmed when you contact them.
Match the drum width to the strip you are rolling: a narrow roller reaches footpaths and trenches but needs more passes on wide areas. Ask the supplier for drum width, machine weight and whether the drums vibrate.
Use the water spray system and keep the nozzles clear, and add a small amount of release agent where the supplier recommends it. Keep the machine moving, because standing on hot asphalt creates marks. The supplier can suggest the right settings for your mix.
