A flatbed has a flat load deck with no sides or roof, which makes loading from any direction possible by forklift, crane or hand. Contractors use it for steel sections, pipes, blocks, pallets, cable drums and site cabins. Because the load is exposed, securing it with chains, straps and edge protectors is part of every trip.

Match the deck to your longest regular load. Steel bars and pipes often arrive in 6 or 12 metre lengths, and a short deck leaves too much overhang. Ask the seller for the internal deck length, the rated payload and whether side posts or headboards are fitted.

Inspect the deck boards or steel floor for rot and cracks, the lashing points, the headboard and the tyres. Check the chassis for weld repairs and the engine for oil leaks. Ask for the registration card and service records, and confirm the paperwork matches the chassis number.
Use chains or straps rated for the load, edge protectors on sharp corners, and at least two tie-downs on any single piece. Load heavy items low and forward over the axles. The supplier can tell you the number of lashing points and their rated strength.
