A telehandler is a rough-terrain forklift with a telescopic boom that reaches forward and up, so it places pallets, blocks and steel on scaffolds, roofs and upper floors. With a bucket, jib or man basket it also moves loose material and lifts people where fitted and permitted. Compare lift capacity, maximum lift height, reach, tyres and hours. Work from the highest point where material must be placed and the heaviest load. Capacity drops as the boom extends, so read the load chart for the reach needed, not the maximum rating. A machine that lifts 4 tonnes at the base may lift much less at full extension.
Forks are standard. Buckets, jibs with a hook, muck grabs and work platforms fit through a quick hitch, so ask which attachments come with each machine and whether the hydraulic lines are fitted. Using a platform to lift people requires an approved platform, and its rating must be confirmed with the supplier.
Check the boom sections and wear pads for play, the rams for leaks, and the load moment indicator. Test the steering modes, brakes and stabilisers where fitted, and look at tyres and the quick hitch. Read the hour meter and ask for service records, the inspection certificate and the ownership papers.
