Start from the heaviest load and its radius, then read the load chart for that crane rather than the headline tonnage. Add a margin for the weight of the hook block and rigging. Each ad should state the capacity, and the supplier can send the chart; a smaller crane at a closer position is often cheaper.
Inspect the boom sections for dents and wear pads, the telescoping and luffing rams for leaks, the outriggers and the slew ring. Test the load moment indicator and check the wire rope. Look at the carrier chassis, tyres and engine, and ask for the inspection certificate, hours and ownership papers.
A mobile crane is road-registered and drives under its own power, unlike crawler cranes. The registration and road permits must be transferred to the buyer, and heavy cranes may need an escort. Most of the 56 are in Sharjah and Dubai, so ask each supplier to confirm paperwork and handover.
