A crawler crane runs on steel tracks, which spread its weight and let it lift and travel with a load on soft or uneven ground. That makes it the choice for piling support, bridge and plant erection, and long-reach lifts on construction sites. Compare capacity, boom and jib length, counterweight and year. The tracks give a wide, stable base on soft ground and allow the crane to move with a suspended load, which a wheeled crane often cannot. Crawler cranes handle the heaviest lifts at a given size. The trade-offs are slow travel and transport on a low-bed, usually with the boom and counterweights removed.
Capacity varies widely across the 14 ads, from small units to large lattice-boom machines. Read the capacity on each ad, then ask for the load chart of that crane, showing what it lifts at which radius with the boom and jib fitted. The rating alone does not tell what lifts the crane can do.
Inspect the track pads, rollers and sprockets for wear, the boom lattice for bent or cracked members, and the wire ropes for broken strands. Test the hoist brakes and the load moment indicator. Ask for the inspection certificate and the hour meter reading, and check that the boom sections and counterweights are included.
It travels on low-bed trailers in several loads, usually the carbody, the boom sections and the counterweights, and assembly takes a crew and a small assist crane on arrival. Ask the supplier what is included, who handles dismantling and loading, and how long it takes.
