A hand roller is a walk-behind machine, with one or two steel drums, used where a ride-on roller cannot fit: footpaths, trench reinstatement, car parks, patching and the edges of a road. Look at drum width, operating weight, vibration and the engine hours. The heavier machines sit under compactors for sale, and a request for a particular size can be sent through post an inquiry.
It compacts asphalt and granular fill in small areas, such as trench patches, pavements, driveways and narrow lanes. A vibrating twin-drum hand roller gives good surface finish on asphalt. For deep layers of soil, a plate compactor or a larger ride-on roller does the work more effectively.
For asphalt and stone base, vibration gives much better compaction in fewer passes, and is worth having on any machine used for repair work. A static roller is lighter and cheaper but needs more passes. Read each ad for the vibration system, and test it for a smooth, even buzz and no overheating.
Look at the drum surface for dents and wear, since they leave marks in asphalt, and check the scrapers and water spray system. Start the engine cold, test the vibration and the forward and reverse control, and read the hour meter. Ask for service records.
Hand rollers are light enough to travel on a pickup with a ramp or a small truck, so most buyers collect them. Nine of the ten listed machines are in Sharjah, which makes comparing several in one trip practical. Agree loading help and the condition of the machine in writing before payment.
