Imperial and US gallons are not the same
An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres and a US gallon is 3.78541 litres, so the imperial gallon is about 20% larger. A "5,000 gallon" water tanker in the UAE holds about 22,700 litres; read as US gallons it would be about 18,900 - a difference of a whole small tanker.
Which gallon to use
Use imperial gallons for UAE and Gulf tanker capacities, old fuel price lists and British specifications. Use US gallons for American machines: fuel tank and hydraulic oil capacities in CAT, John Deere or Bobcat manuals are given in US gallons.
The formula
Litres = imperial gallons × 4.54609, or US gallons × 3.78541. Gallons = litres ÷ 4.54609 (imperial) or ÷ 3.78541 (US).

- A 5,000 gallon water tanker rated in imperial gallons holds 22,730.45 L.
