The formula
Cubic feet = cubic meters × 35.3147. Cubic meters = cubic feet ÷ 35.3147. This comes from 1 foot = 0.3048 m, cubed, so it is exact to the digits shown.
Where CBM and CFT appear
Freight and shipping quote volume in CBM, while American and Indian suppliers often quote cubic feet (CFT) for timber, tanks, crushers and bins. Concrete, fill and excavation in the UAE are measured in m³; imperial volumes mostly turn up in manufacturer specs and imported equipment manuals.
Container volumes
A 20 ft container holds roughly 33 m³ and a 40 ft container roughly 67 m³ (a 40 ft high-cube about 76 m³). These are nominal internal figures; usable cargo space is lower once pallets and stowage gaps are counted, so check the line’s own figures for a booking.
Worked examples
- One cubic meter (1 CBM) is 35.315 ft³.
- A 20 ft container with about 33 m³ of internal space is 1,165.385 ft³.
- A 12 m³ concrete mixer truck load is 423.776 ft³, if a supplier’s sheet is in cubic feet.
