About This Category

Lifting equipment here means scissor lifts, boom lifts, forklifts and similar machines that raise loads or people. Cranes and telehandlers are separate, and the Houston buying hub links to each.

Who Buys in Houston

Maintenance contractors at the refineries and chemical plants near the Ship Channel keep fleets of boom lifts. Warehouse operators around the port buy forklifts and scissor lifts, and electrical and mechanical subcontractors use aerial platforms for overhead work. Rental companies add used units to their yards, too.

Picking the Type

Electric scissor lifts are quiet and clean for indoor floors. Diesel rough-terrain units work outside on uneven ground. Articulating booms get around obstacles, telescopic booms give straight-line reach, and forklifts differ by mast, capacity and tires.

Inspection Checklist

Check the hour meter, then look at the platform, rails, gates and the outriggers or axles. Test every control from the ground and from the basket, and listen for hydraulic whine. Batteries on electric units lose capacity with age, so ask about replacement dates. Older machines from the coast may show corrosion on pins and chains. Insist on seeing a current inspection record, the operator manual and any capacity plates, which must remain on the machine.

Compliance

Used lifts should carry readable decals and a serial plate. Ask the seller about recent inspections and modifications, because an altered machine may need recertification. Short project needs may be cheaper to cover by renting lifting equipment in Houston.
